Comparitive Study Overview

This comparative study explores the ways in which identity can be captured or torn apart through societal expectations. Both artists focus on the depiction of identity and true desires in their own unique styles. The 3 works that I have chosen are ‘The Lovers’ completed in 1928 ‘The Happy Donor’ completed in 1966, by René Magritte and Fragmenta, one piece from a series by Micaela Lattanzio (2013)

I chose these 3 pieces because I was very intrigued by the way the pieces portray human figures, but without the need to reveal their full faces. Instead of capturing the emotions within each character, the artists use various techniques in order to express the emotions depicted lacking facial expression.  The pieces are arranged in different degrees of ambiguity, with each presenting a unique message in their own creative manner. The artists are able to depict emotion and identity through unseen objects/symbols, and express the indirect aspects of identity within the artwork.

After research and analysis of these 3 pieces, I created a painting that explores fragmented identity of The Lovers. Through combination of formal qualities, ideas and purpose, the painting conveys a loss of individualism through love and the importance of open communication.
